A leafy Monumentale hideout where sharp cocktails, plant-only menu make for one of the more unexpected nights out in Milan
Intro
Tucked behind the Cimitero Monumentale, Lom Dopolavoro is the kind of place you almost miss until you push the gate open and realize you’ve walked into a completely different version of the city. The setting is an old 1870 cascina that has been quietly restored into a cocktail bar, vegetarian kitchen, and event space, with two gardens that act as the main draw on warmer evenings. The name “Dopolavoro” literally translates to “after work,” and that’s pretty much the energy on offer: low-key, conversational, made to stay longer than you planned.

The project comes from architect Andrea Borri and Stefano Aiesi, formerly of The Botanical Club, so the design pedigree is the real deal. Exposed brick, black iron details, soft lighting, and a maze-like layout of small communicating rooms inside, with two gardens outside that feel almost suburban. It’s genuinely rare to find this much green inside Milan, and that alone has made it a quiet favourite for people in the know!
What makes it stand out is that it does not push one single identity too hard. It works as a cocktail bar, a casual dinner destination, and a social space with a personality of its own. The menu leans vegetarian, the atmosphere feels intentionally unhurried, and the whole experience gives off that “you somehow ended up somewhere cooler than expected” energy.

The Vibe
The vibe here is a big part of the appeal. Lom Dopolavoro has that soft-industrial-meets-garden mood that Milan keeps trying to do, but not every place actually nails. Here, the greenery, warm lighting, and slightly hidden-away feel do a lot of the heavy lifting. It is the kind of setting that makes even a quick evening drink feel a bit more special, without making a scene about it.
There is also something pleasantly unfussy about the energy. The crowd skews young-professional, design-leaning, mostly couples and small groups of friends. It feels social, but not loud in an exhausting way. Stylish, but not smug. Reviews often circle back to the same points: a relaxing atmosphere, kind staff, good music, and a sense that you can stay a little longer than planned. Which, honestly, is usually the sign of a place doing something right.

The Food
The signature cocktails are clearly one of the stars, and they seem to be one of the main reasons people keep returning. The Negroni Family is the bar manager’s pride and joy, while there are the more experimental builds like the Geddown (vermouth, gin, blueberry, lime, tonka bean). A nice touch is the big long ice cubes, which make the drinks look extra polished and give them that quiet cocktail-bar confidence. Overall, the drinks are clean, balanced, and refreshingly un-fussy, which is honestly the right call for a place this relaxed.
The kitchen is fully vegetarian, no meat, no fish, no exceptions, and many plates are designed to share. The menu rotates with the seasons, but a few things keep showing up as crowd favourites. The polpettine of millet and potato, served with fresh herbs and a tomato mayo, are probably the dish people talk about the most, and they genuinely hold up to the hype. Then there are the gnocchetti, which lean rich and comforting, and the brasato vegetariano, a slow-cooked plant-based take on the Lombard classic that surprises pretty much everyone who came in skeptical.

The Verdict
Lom Dopolavoro feels less like a place you rush to tick off a list and more like one you keep in mind for the right mood. It is especially appealing if you like bars and restaurants that feel a bit more grown, a bit more curated, and a bit less performative. The appeal is not about hype. It is about balance: nice setting, strong drinks, solid vegetarian food, and an atmosphere that lets you actually enjoy being there.
So is it worth a stop? Yes, especially if your ideal Milan evening includes cocktails with personality, food that does not overcomplicate things, and a setting that feels gently removed from the usual city rhythm. Lom Dopolavoro may not be the loudest name in town, but that is also part of its charm. Some places are built to impress for five minutes. This one seems built to make you want to come back.
