Ox House Review

Real charcoal yakiniku all-you-can-eat by Porta Venezia wtih A5 Wagyu Beef

Grill Your Own, Porta Venezia Style

Milan has no shortage of all-you-can-eat, and most of it is a numbers game: pay once, eat fast, leave slightly regretful. Ox House, on Via Lecco about two minutes from Porta Venezia M1, is playing a different sport. It runs on the Japanese yakiniku model, which means a grill sunk into the middle of your table and nobody cooking for you. And crucially, that grill burns real charcoal — not gas, not an electric plate pretending to be fire. The Chinese name over the door, 牛魔王, means Bull Demon King — which tells you exactly how seriously beef is taken in here.

The pricing deserves a look before you book. Dinner is 40€ plus a 3€ cover, lunch is 25€ plus the same cover, and there is a fixed lunch menu at 16€ if you just need to eat and get back to your desk. You order in rounds from your phone over the restaurant Wi-Fi, so plates keep landing as fast as you can clear them. Closed Mondays, two services a day, and weekends genuinely need a reservation.

The Vibe

Dark wood, low warm lighting, booths rather than canteen rows — much closer to a modern izakaya than the fluorescent buffet halls this format usually gets stuck with. There is an extraction hood over every single grill, which matters far more than usual here, because live charcoal throws real smoke in a way a gas burner never does. Ventilation is the difference between leaving a yakiniku place smelling like dinner and leaving smelling like yourself, and here you come out mostly unscathed. Tables sit close, the room gets loud, and it skews group-friendly: birthdays, work teams, dates well past the polite stage.

Service is the sleeper strength. Staff walk first-timers through the cuts, tell you when to flip and when to pull something off, swap your grate when it chars over, and switch into English without drama. Digital ordering means round two usually arrives before you have finished round one, which keeps the rhythm going. The trade-off is a busy room with real turnover, so this is not the table for a four-hour conversation.

The Food

The wagyu is the headline and it comes with fine print. It is A5-grade, sourced from Australia, and each guest gets one portion included in the formula — not unlimited, full stop. Want more? You order it separately at 15€ per 100g, which is honestly the correct move for two people to split. Over live coals it needs about thirty seconds a side and salt, nothing else. Drowning marbling like that in sauce is a crime! Plan around the cap and you will be happy; expect an endless stream and you will not.

Everything else is broad rather than deep. Short rib, pancetta, marinated beef, chicken, shrimp, calamari, mushrooms, zucchini, pumpkin, plus gyoza, hosomaki, ramen, fried rice and hot pot. Cut thickness is not always consistent and some pieces arrive noticeably fattier than others, so choose visually instead of ordering blind. The house Ox House sauce beats mixing four things together yourself, the yuzu sake is a smart palate reset, and the matcha plum drink is a genuinely good call.

The Verdict

At 40€ for dinner this is fair rather than cheap, and the A5 portion is what carries the value. Lunch at 25€ looks like the smarter math until you read the details: the lunch formula has no wagyu at all and a shorter list of items across the board. That is not a trick, it is simply a different product. Go at lunch for volume and variety on a budget, go at dinner if the wagyu is the reason you are coming in the first place.

Come hungry, skip the rice, and do not spend stomach space on sushi you can get anywhere else in this city. Solo diners will find the format awkward, and if you hate the smell of grilled beef in your hair, you already know who you are. But for a group that wants to cook, argue about doneness and eat for two straight hours, Ox House is one of the more fun tables in Porta Venezia right now.
